Loss or theft of mobile devices is a constant concern. But how about knowing who has robbed you just a few hours after it happens? And how about a photo of said thief for good measure? Sounds too good to be true, but a few unlucky criminals have already had such technology used against them.
There’s the case of a recent mobile phone theft in New York, for example. Unbeknown to the thief, the phone contained something called ‘I Got Ya’ – an app that takes a picture of the user when the phone is unlocked with an incorrect password. Not only does it send the picture to the owner – it uses GPS to tell him or her the illicit user’s location.
The story of ex-Rugby star Will Carling is similar. Having lost his iPad in London, he tracked it down to a block of flats using an app called MobileMe. Receiving no answer when he knocked on doors at the flats, he left notes asking the thief to hand his iPad to the police. He waited a few hours and then tracked the device moving again. He got it back after it was handed in at a nearby railway station.
These examples show how easy it’s become to track property and resources and gather photographic evidence to protect them. And it isn’t just Mr and Mrs Average who are benefiting. Firms are benefiting as well.
Take CCTV, for example. New technologies have made it a great deal smarter than it was.
Taking our CCTV services as an example, we’re applying artificial intelligence to scan images and detect suspicious activities and to match name badges with faces. Innovations like these are transforming what were once relatively dumb systems into all-seeing members of staff.
But useful though it is for protecting people and assets, CCTV can’t protect every mobile device. To fill the gap, we’re designing systems that will be capable of capturing unwanted or unusual activity and triggering whatever action is necessary to ensure businesses are neither damaged or put at risk.
And that won’t be the end of it. As technology evolves, there’s one thing you can be sure of – we’ll be putting it to good use.
If you’re on the right side of the law, you’ll be delighted. Criminals had better watch out!
