The most influential voices in security

Bruce Schneier

Security’s important; no one’s going to argue with that. And when you’re responsible for the security of your organisation, you want to know you have the best on your side.

When BT’s security chief, Bruce Schneier, talks, people listen. A fact reflected in his top-three ranking in SOA World Magazine’s ‘most powerful voices in security’ list. Schneier ranked third after US Representative for California Darrell Issa and William Lynn III, US Deputy Secretary of Defence.

Jim Kaskade, from SOA World Magazine says Schneier is popular because he’s “willing to speak his mind on topics where people want transparent and insightful perspective”.

So what is the third most powerful voice in security saying right now?

He’s moving on from the ‘how’ of security and turning his attention to the ‘why’, and how a group can best provide security for individual members from other members of that group. Schneier calls this societal security and defines it as “where security really gets interesting”.

There will always be a dishonest minority and there will always be a need for security to protect the honest majority from the machinations of the dishonest. What Schneier is examining now is how the information age affects the security systems society puts in place and what changes will be needed in the future.

There is no doubt that this latest avenue of exploration will provoke debate and lead to positive change in the business security world.

Share his thinking by listening to his keynote address at the RSA Conference 2011.
